Welcome to the Internet of things Wiki!

Introduction:[]

As an IT technician at a small security systems company, my manager has tasked me with investigating how we could integrate Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into our products and services. To accomplish this, I will focus on two sectors:

home and industrial/transportation.

I will examine four specific examples of smart technology: Google Nest Protect, Samsung SmartThings sensors for doors/windows and motion detection, Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus, and a Fingerprint Padlock.

This Wiki is a collection of research on 3 sectors which use IoT devices, these being Home, Retail and Transportation sectors.

For each of these sectors, 4 IoT devices were chosen, explaining the purpose of each, and any functions that they perform, as well as the applications of these devices.

These descriptions will also provide details on the characteristics and principles of each device, while highlighting their individual benefits and any risks that are presented from using them.

Home Sector[]

Smart Technology: Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus

Purpose: The Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus is a smart doorbell designed to enhance home security by providing video surveillance and two-way communication at the front door.

Application: The Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus is installed at the front door of a home, allowing users to see, hear, and speak to visitors through their smartphone or other connected devices. The device also records video footage when motion is detected or the doorbell is pressed, providing an added layer of security and evidence in case of a security breach.

Principles:

  • Collection and analysis of data (video footage and motion detection) to trigger an action (alerts and notifications)
  • Always-on connectivity for continuous monitoring and real-time communication
  • Access to real-time data, which is transmitted to the cloud or server for processing and storage

Characteristics:

  • General characteristics:
    • Benefits: Enhanced home security, remote monitoring capabilities, two-way communication with visitors
    • Risks: Privacy concerns related to video surveillance, potential for hacking and unauthorized access to video footage
  • Technical characteristics:
    • Low mobility, as the device is installed in a fixed location at the front door
    • Time-controlled, with regular motion detection and instant alerts when triggered
    • Location-specific trigger, as the device is activated by motion or the doorbell being pressed

Sector: Industrial/Transportation Smart Technology: Fingerprint Padlock

Purpose: A Fingerprint Padlock is a smart lock designed to enhance security in industrial and transportation settings by providing biometric access control to restricted areas or assets.

Application: Fingerprint Padlocks are used to secure various assets, such as warehouses, cargo containers, and vehicles, in industrial and transportation environments. Authorized users can unlock the padlock using their pre-registered fingerprints, eliminating the need for traditional keys and reducing the risk of unauthorized access.

Principles:

  • Collection and analysis of data (fingerprint scans) to trigger an action (unlocking the padlock)
  • Access to stored fingerprint data for authentication and authorization
  • Integration with other security systems for centralized access control and monitoring

Characteristics:

  • General characteristics:
    • Benefits: Enhanced security, eliminates the need for physical keys, reduces the risk of unauthorized access
    • Risks: Privacy concerns related to biometric data storage, potential for false rejections or acceptances
  • Technical characteristics:
    • Low mobility, as the padlock is used to secure specific assets or locations
    • Time-controlled, with access logs and audit trails
    • Low power consumption, as the padlock typically operates on battery power

In conclusion, by examining these four examples of smart technology across the home and industrial/transportation sectors, I have gained valuable insights into how IoT devices can enhance security, convenience, and efficiency. This knowledge will help our company make informed decisions about integrating IoT technologies into our security systems and products, allowing us to offer cutting-edge solutions to our customers.
